There is no such thing as the perfect fridge/cooker/netbook, such as may be produced by State or commune. This is because of individual need – the choice offered by capitalism in fact gives to more according to their need than one size fits all, because it doesn't.
I, a single person, do not need a large fridge. A family of six needs a large fridge. If I had a car, I should not need one that accommodates buggies and the week’s shopping for six.
I who live in a two-floor flat and have also to vacuum my mum’s flat on the ground floor love my Samsung SC8442 among other reasons because it is light enough to take up and down stairs and because its compact shape makes it much more manoeuvrable. Some people prefer upright cleaners and indeed my old Hoover was an excellent cleaner until it died (and it had a long life, no planned obsolence there) but shit on the grounds of both weight and manoeuvrability. The biggest, shiniest, most beautiful Hoover is of no use to me personally.
How in communist society is the range of choice that matches goods to needs to be met? To paint with a broad brush, such ‘Marxist’ revolutions as there have been were about food, clothes and shelter. They were not about to all a landline and a mobile.
To recycle a golden oldie, what do the poor eat, bread and jam, what do the rich eat, strawberries and cream! Comes the revolution, you will eat strawberries and cream! Little voice mutters, But I don’t like strawberries and cream! Comes the revolution, you will eat strawberries and cream! But comrades, I'm trying to lose weight. Negative on the cream.
But I don’t want a £1499 state-of-the-art Sony Vaio laptop! Comes the revolution I shall have one anyway? I doubt it but let us explore the world of computing. First of course no-one wants to lug a lap-top around when he or she can carry about a third of the weight, so the netbook was born, which doesn’t mean someone might not have a lap-top serving the purpose of a desk-top. My need is not for state-of-the-art software. What I do I do with Microsoft Word and Excel 1997 and Adobe Photoshop 5.5 with ImageReady. This limits my capacity to produce animations but a) the world does not end thereby and b) GIMP open-source = free software provides state-of-the-art capacity were I to get my head round it. I try to like the Open Office software suite, also free, which I have of course downloaded, but I always seem to end up writing in my old copy of Word. I can’t see an obvious reason for this, since the interface is virtually identical, but there it is. I have to have Internet Explorer (which is free anyway) to connect with my work’s VPN, but I don’t like it and the rest of my Weblife is conducted in Firefox (also free). Software does not die. Occasionally it malfunctions, in which case you just reload it. There is nothing for which open-source software (freeware) has not been developed See SourceForge and Major Geeks.
Under the radar of Adobe and Microsoft, everything is free except the basic hardware, to take according to need. Computing has therefore some claim to be the perfect communist world, but neither man nor woman lives by php script alone. The means of production in the virtual world are some geek’s brain and the manufacturers of the hardware if anything fall over themselves to produce the cheapest. What I do I do on a Packard-Bell dot.s netbook and in economic terms anyone can do it.
Similarly the Net is crammed with people falling over themselves to offer learning resources for free right up to postgraduate level with MIT Open Courseware. As the excuses for being an empty-headed animal diminish hourly, Marxists do themselves no favours by repetition of the same tired old mantras. They don’t want to learn, the masses, I mean, not the Marxists, though come to think of it, equally the Marxists. They like being dull, ignorant animals. You can get a lot of Left-wing support that way, with the current anti-culture of the hegemony of the feral.
Shall we have another go at bourgeois values, the values taught by the ruling class? Let us be blunt: aka the inculcation of values and conduct that make the feral masses fit for the company of other human beings. Certainly other human beings include bloated capitalists but the immediate victims of animals are their fellow-workers.
Not that I’ve been here before or anything:
A confused little monkey in his white coat sits in his lab in Oxford and it beats in his brain, there is no god but DNA and Dawkins is his prophet. And he looks at his god and his god is all and all are equal, all are identical, and there are no love, sex, pain, death and the whole damn‘ thing, there is no ‘human‘, there is only biochemistry, and we must all react in the same way and feel the same thing and cannot question what we think and what we feel and cannot change it, and if we do not react in the same way and feel the same thing that is false consciousness and bourgeois conditioning, and if we say we do not react in the same way and feel the same thing and we can change how we react and how we feel and each of us is different, that is bourgeois conditioning, because we are all equal, we are all the same, and the humanities terrify the little monkey by reflecting on love, sex, pain, death and the whole damn‘ thing, and our current ills are not the fault of liberty but the fault of failing to encourage people to exercise their hearts and minds because their hearts and minds don‘t exist and people who are emotionally whole do not break up their housing-estates and their fellow-humans who live there and people who do are not exercising their freedom but being slaves of the god but the confused little monkey knows better. The confused little monkey isn’t capable of taking into account the pain of people at seeing things smashed up, the distress of people at not being able to use the ‘phone box, the pain of people who are bruised and bleeding. The confused little monkey knows that bourgeois law exists solely to perpetuate the economic status quo. There is no activity of heart or mind in the confused little monkey’s world.
But don't wrangle with us so long as you apply, to our intended abolition of bourgeois property, the standard of your bourgeois notions of freedom, culture, law, etc. Your very ideas are but the outgrowth of the conditions of your bourgeois production and bourgeois property, just as your jurisprudence is but the will of your class made into a law for all, a will, whose essential character and direction are determined by the economical conditions of existence of your class.
Marx and Engels: The Manifesto of the Communist Party
Law, morality, religion, are to him so many bourgeois prejudices, behind which lurk in ambush just as many bourgeois interests.
Marx and Engels: The Manifesto of the Communist Party
But the little monkey is frightened – sheesh, it lives in a permanent state of terror. People go on exercising their hearts and minds anyway and they come up with ideas and empathy and, worst of all people who don’t smash telephone boxes because they see it is unconstructive, unhelpful and possibly lethal, think they’re an improvement on those who do and criticize and are judgemental and condemnatory and it beats in the little monkey’s brain that we’re all equal and such people must be eliminated (and of course the telephone-box smashers aren’t at fault because they are the victim of economic forces) and he’s a right case. But people fall on their knees before him anyway, because he’s a scientist and a rational man.
Something like that. You think it’s called dialectical materialism, scientific socialism for nothing? 98% of my DNA shared with the chimp! And I brachiate! It really obsesses them. Clearly the goal of biological evolution is strap-hanging on the Victoria Line.
The terminology of ‘bourgeois morality’ describes things that exist and do not stop existing because ‘bourgeois morality’ supposedly doesn’t exist: it differentiates between one course of action and another. We live in a society wherein to fail any of the criteria by which ‘bourgeois morality’ judges ‘nice, decent, sane, reasonable’ or ‘bourgeois culture’ judges ‘intelligent, educated’ is to be better than anyone who meets a criterion. In fact the more of them a person fails, the more the person held up as a pillar of society because the criteria don’t exist and claiming they do is just a plot by the old order to once again suppress those who are actually brilliant and wonderful. Unfortunately the criteria continue to describe observable and quantifiable phenomena and modes of behaviour and their effect on others and the lure of that mad life-diminishing creed known as Marxism that denies people their minds, their will, their hearts, their humanity - I do not for a moment believe that Marx himself desired this denial - is that it is the ultimate cop-out, evasion of being free, responsible and human.
Ah, bourgeois morality, the plot to keep the workers in their place. There is space for this, ‘thou shalt not steal’ and the plunder of capitalism versus crushing punishments for theft by the starving. What then is worker morality? Workers not stealing from other workers? Someone should tell the workers.
What process has taken place in what pass for their minds?
Everyone who isn’t ‘bourgeois’ has a morality opposing bourgeois morality, meaning anything bourgeois morality holds as bad, working people, black people, gay people hold as good. Ah, that would be why the mass of people in the country deserted Labour. It’s the excuse for letting all the dirt out of its cage. The millions of decent working people, black people, gay people don’t matter. No doubt they suffer from a lamentable false consciousness. The only people who matter are pieces of shit, because they have the proper socialist morality. Under the pretext of inclusion, the vomit are elevated. Good game. Goal well defended: any objections are a) so pathetically bourgeois and dated and b) not objections to the conduct of an individual but prejudice against the group to which he or she belongs. The inclusion leading to the dominance of the working-class and others excluded is made co-terminous with the dominance of the minorities within those groups who reject bourgeois morality – crud. Thieves, liars, thugs, jumped-up little popinjays, haters of education will now rule. That would be why millions of working-class people just love living on vandalized estates where it’s not safe to go out at night. They just don’t understand that the culture of the yob is their culture.
The materialist conception of history starts from the principle that production and, next to production, the exchange of things produced, is the basis of every social order; that in every society that has appeared in history, the distribution of wealth and with it the division of society into classes or estates are dependent upon what is produced, how it is produced, and how the products are exchanged. Accordingly, the ultimate causes of all social changes and political revolutions are to be sought, not in men's brains, not in their growing insight into eternal truth and justice, but in changes in the modes of production and exchange. They are to be sought, not in the philosophy, but in the economics of each particular epoch.
Engels: Socialism: Utopian and Scientific
Ye have heard it said that capitalism is the exploitation of man by man and communism is the reverse. Socialism is essentially about money. Socialists are fixated, obsessed, with the stuff, just as much as any bloated capitalist. Their measurement of human beings is how much or how little they possess. (Hence of course the phenomenon known as the Belgravia or Hampstead socialist: capitalism might be the root of all evil but by heck while it survives they’ll take all the bounty it can offer.) Money is the solution to everything. When two or more socialists are gathered together they talk economics. If you get more money, do what normal people call succeed, you get to be a class enemy, possessed of Privilege. If you have more to start with, any succeeding you might do is wholly a consequence of that inequality. The solution to the ‘class-guilt’ of the Hampstead socialist was laid down some time ago: sell all thou hast and give to the poor. That is not on his or her agenda. His or her agenda is strictly limited to giving other people’s money to the poor.
It is hardly surprising that such socialists are not to be trusted with a free society or that socialism represents the cold hand of death on any initiative, creativity, change.
There is no love in this world and there is of course no individuality. Socialism kills because there is no love in that world.
The important thing to understand is that the beautiful dream, the socialist paradise on earth, is essentially a distorted version of the actual beautiful dream wherein everyone will be at a super-advanced level of consciousness, Zen monks rule, OK, and so social problems will disappear because people have changed, but the socialist dream is the property of those who don’t have the faintest clue what they’re talking about. Those who do know it isn’t gonna happen and the nearest you can get is a free and democratic society where people have their options open.
Despite the formidable evidence to the contrary, such Marxists just know that human beings are simply the product of the external world. Fill the jug with blue water and you have blue water man. Fill the jug with green water and you have green water man.
The distortion lies in the refusal to understand or even admit the existence of consciousness and so of levels of consciousness. It isn’t going to happen because the essence of socialism denies the possibility of internal change. Compulsion is the only solution available within the model. Authority is the core of socialism. Told you are green water man, green water man you shall be.
It is to be regretted that a portion of our community should be practically in slavery, but to propose to solve the problem by enslaving the entire community is childish…I confess that many of the socialistic views that I have come across seem to me to be tainted with ideas of authority, if not of actual compulsion.
Oscar Wilde, 'The Soul of Man under Socialism', 1891
Of course no-one listens to poets, which is a pity because a great many people killed by Communism might have lived instead of being dead.
Once upon a time there were people called aristocrats who thought they were divinely appointed to rule: owning large chunks of land and knowing how to breed horses proved it; they needed consult with no-one, brooked no opposition, could give jobs to their mates, live or do such work as was necessary in elegant surroundings while those who had to toil lived and toiled in squalor. Revolution came and people called workers thought they were divinely appointed to rule: having been serfs, having tilled the soil and worked in the mines proved it; they needed consult no-one, brooked no opposition, could give jobs to their mates, live and do such work as was necessary in elegant surroundings while those who had to toil lived and toiled in slightly less squalor. So much for the history of Russia. Just remember being a dustman makes you as mysteriously innately fitted for power as did being a duke. What was that about the opium of the people again?
Telling people nothing is anyone’s fault, except of course that of evil capitalist society, is also of course a first-class opiate, as is, no, you’re not thick, lazy, illiterate, deluded about your abilities and generally unemployable. The socialist is a fantasist.
The extension of the franchise – isn’t that something to do with McDonald’s. That people have died throughout centuries of struggle, wars have been fought– people have even been force-fed and chained themselves to railings – for liberty of conscience, freedom of speech, the freedom to be oneself should not be taught. People should not think they are free. They won’t do what they’re told then. They won’t be dependent. They’ll have the head-sets of victims, slaves. People should be kept ignorant. Knowing about the world changes how people look at it and that would be messy. People today don’t need to know anything that will equip them to be human, let alone citizens of a democracy. People today don’t need to know about anything that will upset Leftists. Especially of course they should not be capable of rational thought, confident in their arguments. That there has been a relentless assault from the Left on language, truth, logic, liberty and individual autonomy over the last thirty years or so is evident. That this assault has been a docilization implant is also evident. One of its control mechanisms is indeed to make people frightened of being called fascist if they oppose the complete intellectual corruption that is Newspeak. The victim culture has the express intent of eroding moral and intellectual courage. People are taught that they are helpless and the supremacy of rational thought is frowned upon. The assault was launched and executed in order that people be afraid to speak their minds.
By marrying the free market to Marxist anthropology and consequent deification of self-centredness, our leaders hope to keep the noses of the little piggies firmly in the trough, obsessed with things, they won’t bother to think, won’t notice they aren’t free.
…the new facts made imperative a new examination of all past history. Then it was seen that all past history, with the exception of its primitive stages, was the history of class struggles; that these social classes warring with each other are always the products of the relations of production and exchange -- in a word, of the economic relations of their epoch; that therefore the economic structure of society always forms the real basis, from which, in the last analysis, the whole superstructure of legal and political institutions as well as of the religious, philosophical, and other ideas of a given historical period is to be explained.
Engels: Socialism: Utopian and Scientific
Once you have said that all (Engels’ italics) history is the history of class struggles, you have declared yourself to be terminally boring. Uggh with his club is not what is interesting and often delightful about human beings.
The terrible irony of course is that under this dispensation civilized educated Marxists have not to mention had a very short life-span.
Pause for chorus of when will they ever learn.
Language differentiates one thing, one action, one set of circumstances, from another. One person finds a wallet full of credit cards and hands it in to the police. Another person goes on a spending spree. 'Honest' does not exist in limbo; it differentiates certain actions from certain other actions. Joe opened the door. The door is therefore open; one can see what is on the other side of it, as one cannot if it is closed.
Words ascribe different values to different actions. Joe opened the door. People could see the pack of hungry wolves on the other side which shortly afterwards devoured them. Are some actions not more sensible than others?
To say no action is different in value from any other action has a strange coherence to it. This, however, is not the inchoate howl. The fascist Left are possibly the most judgmental people on the planet. Values, indeed, are attributed to actions or words that they cannot contain. The baboons bay at the slightest deviance. Disgusted of Cheltenham is a cool dude in comparison.
Stoning to death a mentally handicapped girl for 'crimes against chastity' has absolutely no value attached to it. To attribute a positive value to it is the expression of a cultural norm. To attribute a negative value to it must surely equally be the expression of a cultural norm. Since every culture supposedly possesses the same value as every other culture, feminist fury and contempt must be just as valuable and just as true and just as beyond criticism.
Starving man to be hanged for stealing sheep! Classic ‘bourgeois morality’. If there is no private property, then it’s everyone’s sheep. To each according to his need and all that. But it can't be everyone's sheep because there isn’t enough of it, enough meat to feed everyone, enough wool to clothe everyone. The only terms in which it can possibly be everyone's sheep are if it is like a family pet, there for enjoyment, or if it is to be bred from, so doing its bit for the common good, but even then there must be some conflict of interest among 'everyone'. Someone has to so designate it and ignore the opposition, who for example want to eat it and may reasonably state that if their views cut no ice it can't be regarded as their sheep. Someone has to be responsible for the sheep, even if it is everyone’s sheep, in the way, say, a park-keeper is responsible for communal space. The sheep does not exist in a vacuum. It has been reared for a purpose, whether to be eaten, to provide wool or to produce more sheep. Someone has to designate that purpose, even if it’s the State. But then we may say a park is only the property of those who wish to enjoy it, not those who wish to build on it. So then we may say – what may we say? We may say that ownership, rights over, the right to determine what happens to, comes into play the moment there are options, divergence of opinion as to what to do with, and there are always options.
We may also say that ownership doesn’t necessarily affect or influence which option is chosen. I could knock the hole in the wall of my flat. The fact that it’s the landlord’s wall is pretty irrelevant to the sheer stupidity of so doing.
One of the few areas in which the Left is wholly unblemished is the fight against slavery, against trafficking in human beings. One of life’s little ironies, possibly an internal contradiction indeed, is its contempt for personal ownership, for the sovereignty of the individual over himself or herself. Who owns me if I do not own myself? The State, religious nutters…The Left is second to none in upholdng the right to exercise the rights of property over other human beings.
Ah, those bourgeois values, comrades, teaching respect for property. Yup, private property, public property. You do not scar the trees and wantonly slaughter the ducks in a public park and you do not smash up someone else’s car. Smash up your own, if you like, not someone else’s. Someone else is not your property and by extension his or her property is not yours to do with as you will. Someone else is independent of and separate from you and has decided the purpose to which he or she wishes to put his or her car and that is rarely being the target of your feral urges, and the private property that is sacrosanct is the mind and body of another human being.
This is of course bound up with the animal filth that words and ideas one detests oppress one. Certainly the following:
The world's ideologies divide into cultures of the outside and cultures of the inside. A culture of the outside holds that the individual is moulded by the external world and so is both victim and slave - to environment, to fellow-humans, to self - is a hollow gourd or empty shell to be filled with the Beloved Leader's version of reality. Where no determined State attempts at brain-washing occur, the hollow gourd is merely a passive recipient of fate, a creature of instinct, to whom responsibility is meaningless. A culture of the inside holds that the individual has a central processing unit (CPU) otherwise known as mind that analyses the external world and forms himself or herself and so his or her own views from the results of this analysis, is capable of choice. Where there is no CPU, nothing inside to form oneself with, the opinions and reactions of others are defining and must therefore be controlled or censored. This underpins Orwell's 'Freedom is Slavery' and Marcuse's 'repressive tolerance'. You have no means of handling words that displease you. They therefore oppress you.
This has implications that have wholly corroded society. Firstly there is the victim culture. Since nothing is your fault, you are the product of socio-economic forces, it is wrong to deride, criticize, censure, abuse you if you behave like a piece of vomit. Secondly, what others see as intellectual corruption and social engineering is not understood as wrong – it’s only the socio-economic circumstances into which you were born that prevented you excelling academically, everyone is just as bright as everyone else, and having failed five CSEs in no way indicates that you are not just as good as someone who achieved an Honours degree. Thirdly, the censorious proliferate.
The root of this is the Marxist-materialist religion of apeism. There were ten green bottles hanging on the wall and if one green bottle should accidentally fall…Actually there were seven green bottles. Art, literature, language, history, philosophy, liberty and theology, and holding them on the wall was mind. Then one day behind the useful idiots a group of evil men removed the lynch-pin that there be no green bottles hanging on the wall and we all have to act like and think like and obey like intelligent chimps instead of being humans.
Liberty is a human concept and most of our problems with it stem from the primate elements in the brain. The most elementary of these evolutionary hang-ups is the primate pecking order. A larger more powerful ape beats his chest and otherwise suggests his displeasure and the unconscious thinker toes the line. Only might is right. The mental development of individual humans starts where physical evolution ends. Obsession with form, external appearance, is another evolutionary hang-up. As a chimp recoils at the shape of a snake, so racists and sexists respond to colour or gender. Elements on the Left are equally hypnotised by biology. Where individual characteristics such as honesty, integrity, intellect, application - qualities of mind - have been abandoned as 'elitist' or 'relative values', all that remains is the nonsense that the most insignificant of human attributes, gender and race, are defining.
Mind is supposed not to exist and recourse to fact and reason is rejected as elitist. The West is therefore supposed to lie defenceless in what is essentially a mind-game: mind, fact and reason do not stop existing because traitors say they do; the trick is persuade (by force or otherwise) the majority of people to a mind-set from which mind, fact and reason are absent. In particular they should not allude to the facts of democracy and civil liberties; since mind does not exist, the ability to make up one’s mind cannot exist, let alone the right to do so and, Homo sapiens sapiens being in its raw state before its mind has been kicked into working a self-centred little sod, people cannot be expected to consider another’s point of view and so accept another’s equal right to speak.
Manifestations of heart or mind transcending the hard wiring - ethical or intellectual standards - are dismissed as elitist, the benchmark being set by the Inner Ape. Standards of behaviour in public have been cast off as some tyrannical yoke imposed from without when they are what may be expected to arise naturally from within. A fit young man who is compos mentis might reasonably be expected to see the woman with two toddlers has a greater need for his seat than he.
Also, of course, the sexism of slum-animals is only a problem to me because the marked absence of the hegemony of freedom and democracy demanding they keep their filthy hands off me.
There is also the angle of what are people for, wherein it is given they are in some sense property, tools of a greater purpose, whether God’s will or the demands of the State. Certainly Soviet Marxism took this lock, stock and barrel from the more disgusting kind of religious ape. To insist on being oneself not a creature of the will of others is evil/insanity. The ape has a stock vocabulary - wilful, insolent, impudent, all terms which simply mean resistant to a wilful, insolent, impudent animal attempting to impose its will not only on other people but on reality itself, to shape the mental world of all who surround it, to create a false reality and call it Troof.
There are persons, it seems, who worrit painfully over whether the universe has a purpose, whether life has a purpose, how 'cold' and 'mechanistic' is science to say the universe will come to an end and that's that. I really shouldn't worry about it, guys, it won't be in your time.
They could consider the lilies of the field of course, which toil not neither do they spin, and yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Not Solomon in all his glory, etc.
'What is the point of this, what is it for?' may be sensible questions with obvious answers. What is the point of going to the supermarket? I need to eat. What is the point of filling in some ridiculous form? Scrap it or denounce the idiot who devised it. 'What am I for?' is not a question I can get the hang of. Perhaps it comes from a need to be needed, a need to be defined by the external world, draw one's sense of who one is from it. Of what, whose purpose am I an agent?
'What am I for' is potentially a rather nasty question, carrying the implication that I may not choose my own purpose, should I wish to have one, my purpose has been allocated to me, and I am but the humble instrument thereof. There may be some rather severe questions of ontology here. Why does existence require justification? Why is its fact not sufficient in itself? Why does the universe have to justify its existence?
I am. The meaning of my existence is to be. Should I elect to attribute to myself a purpose, then that purpose is to be all I can be. Why should I be for anything? Here I sit on the third rock from the sun, part of something huge and fascinating called the universe, huge and fascinating equally to the most rigid materialist and the dreamiest mystic. If you are not interested in anything, then I guess you are basically in that condition known as clinical depression and you need to feel 'for' something to galvanize you into normal function. If your life is shitty, you may wonder what the point of it is and being told that the shittiness is God's will against which you may not revolt may if you are sufficiently brain-washed make you content with it. There are of course two kinds of shittiness. One is how you feel about things, which is entirely under your control, and the actions of others which are outside your control, unless you join with others to form the Labour Party, or something.
Rather fortunately for a lot of people, I do not think they exist for anything, because once people are designated a purpose if they fail to be fit-for-use they are expendable. Are you noting this loud and clear, comrades? To be all one can be is to exercise one’s heart and mind to their fullest. If you don’t want to do that, fine. Just keep your bloody hands off others. In both cases, the religious loon and the orthodox Marxist, they of course assume rather it is their purpose in life to fuck around other people and impose their delusional realities. We all have our little lives to lead, bound upon the Wheel; I do not think any of the pieces of feral ape-shit who surround me are 'for' anything. They have their little lives to lead. I have my little life to lead. They keep their bloody paws off my life and get on with their own lives.
As I might have said before, if it’s not demonstrable, it can’t be binding. Some people think Mohammed was the Messenger of God. Some don’t. Some people think Jesus was the Son of God. Some don’t. As I have said before, argument by authority is a fallacy.
As I might have said before, authoritarian, totalitarian and plain murderous governments do not necessarily start evil, but merely decide particular delusions are truth, in which case they become more and more oppressive in order to uphold lies and garbage against people pointing out that lies and garbage are what they stand for. Thus New Labour. To be desperate to suppress an alternative point of view means mostly that you haven’t got a leg to stand on.
The free world rests on the liberation of questioning. The unfree world rests on the suppression of questioning.
At the root of this is that they are totally psychologically unevolved.
Shall we just have Consciousness 101 again
Consciousness 101
Level One is OOK, Monkey-man ruled by fear, relating everything to self, dividing the rest of the world into inferiors (smaller monkeys) of whom he has no fear and can therefore maltreat with impunity and superiors (bigger monkeys) who can hurt him and to whom he must defer
Monkey-man is very frightened of words, ideas, love, the things that make him human, and these must be strictly controlled. They can hurt him. They may demean or elevate his position in the primate pecking order, a position jealously guarded and bolstered with ritual, with costume and more recently with files, for information is power. The more things he is able to control the more important he thinks he is.
As a chimpanzee recoils at the sight of a snake-shape, so Monkey-man is only capable of coping with the external form of his fellow-human beings, their position relative to him defined by their colour or their gender. His mind is a swamp. He lives entirely in an imagined reality he has acquired from others. These others may be parents or peers. The imagined reality may be formalized as a belief-system. That belief-system must condemn all independent activity of heart and mind, since it is threatened thereby. He has no idea why he thinks what he thinks, only that 'everyone knows' it to be the truth. Consequently he is acutely vulnerable to criticism of it, with no emotional or intellectual means of handling what he perceives as a threat.
The Good is what authority, power, says is the good, regardless of how evidently it is actually the mad, the bad and the sad.
Level Two is where some ability to see others as individuals kicks in, and so some acknowledgement of the rights of others appears. The person has begun to use his heart and mind, to question what he has been taught, to empathize with those he has been taught to despise. He begins to connect to the reality of other humans.
Level Three is where he accepts, at least theoretically, the equal rights of others. I say what I think. You say what you think. I walk down the street unimpeded. You walk down the street unimpeded. Here he may be sufficiently mature to shrug off negative comment, capable of reason and no longer frightened of words, though he will abandon argument and surrender to demand for censorship when frightened or there is a 'threat to public order'. He generally sees people as individuals and likes or dislikes individuals, not classes or races, but still retains a knee-jerk subservience to a bigger monkey: he respects authority and equates power with the good. If he has a religion it will have evolved from terror to love but will probably still be fairly literal - he will believe that Jesus' resurrection or Mohammed's Night Journey are fact not metaphor.
Free and democratic societies rest on their citizens making some connection with reality, primarily the reality that their fellow-citizens are independent and separate, not an extension of them, and are equal in rights. Once people think and as has happened encouraged to think and as the feral branches of religion have always told them to think that the imagined realities, the delusional realities in their heads are sacrosanct, freedom and democracy are threatened. The assault is on reality.
