You are targeting the old, you are targeting people who have worked most of their lives, and I hope you die screaming.
You are targeting people like Stephen Smith who are obviously desperately unwell, and I hope you die screaming.
You are targeting people no decent person would expect to still be in the labour market. Indecent persons of course would have the aged, the handicapped, the ill working till they dropped. Arbeit macht frei, and all that.
This is not an attack on fraud, on scrounging, on the work-shy, but an attack on the Welfare State itself, except of course to your narrow, nasty little brains anyone who seeks State support is a scrounger, clearly the remit given to the nasty narrow rat-like entities to whom you give power of life and death over the vulnerable and who of course enjoy every second of that power.
As I have said, hell can be quite a pleasing fantasy. May, Cameron, Rees-Mogg, all professed Christians. I don’t think Jesus would have much time for them.
Historical note: Once upon a, say 60 years ago, a government could plausibly claim that females of retirement age were dependents, who had not paid in in their own right. Someone who lives on another planet like Rees-Mogg probably still thinks that, we’re all sitting at home, getting lad’s tea ready for when he comes back from ‘t pit.
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/more-women-have-jobs-in-britain-than-ever-before-but-figures-show-the-gender-pay-gap-is-rising-too-9139154.html
This article is from 2014. Can’t be bothered to keep digging to find precisely how many women were in work in 2009; ten years of contributions are required for the State pension, a slightly curious figure, actually. People who have worked for ten years have surely generally worked for longer. A year here and there? Ten years before becoming a mum? I can think readily enough of people laid off in their 50s whose age stops them getting another job. Are people laid off and judged too old at 30? But that’s OK, because you’ll still get your full pension?
Why did my grandparents fail to get rich? Because they did sensible jobs. Grandpa Howard was a civil servant in the India Office on the textiles side, as befitted the son of a master-weaver, and Grandpa Palmer was a Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths in the East End. Grandmama Howard did not I think ever work, but then she had six children. Grandmama Palmer, however, did: she was a nurse during the ‘14-‘18 war and subsequently in the flu epidemic.
Sort of people who were the backbone of the country and the rest of the hype pollies come out with. My mum didn’t work all her life, but most of it was civil service. My papa was of course a civil servant during the war, but otherwise a more varied career, can’t call either advertising or authoring exactly a sensible job, except to the limited extent that we are going so far back that in his day advertising did have an educational value: it introduced people to useful new things, such as deodorants.
My grandfather, albeit at a later date, somewhere around 1910 onwards, was 'one of the English officials who occasionally stray thither'. Consequently he worked to get the first Labour government into power:
... The foregoing description furnishes an idea of the aspect of the interior of the dwellings. But let us follow the English officials, who occasionally stray thither, into one or two of these workingmen's homes.
On the occasion of an inquest held Nov. 16th, 1843, by Mr. Carter, coroner for Surrey, upon the body of Ann Galway, aged 45 years, the newspapers related the following particulars concerning the deceased: She had lived at No. 5 White Lion Court, Bermondsey Street, London, with her husband and a nineteen- year-old son in a little room, in which neither a bedstead nor any other furniture was to be seen. She lay dead beside her son upon a heap of feathers which were scattered over her almost naked body, there being neither sheet nor coverlet. The feathers stuck so fast over the whole body that the physician could not examine the corpse until it was cleansed, and then found it starved and scarred from the bites of vermin. Part of the floor of the room was torn up, and the hole used by the family as a privy.
Engels: Condition of the Working-Class in England in 1845
I know perfectly well what happens to the poor when no-one cares and it happens whether they have always tried to be careful or whether they have drunk away every penny they have ever earned. It’s called inability to pay what it costs to live, in consequence of which you die.
The glory of the Sally Army is it picks people up off the floor, no matter who, no matter why, and gets them once more able to live, gets them off drink/drugs if those are a factor, gets them away from domestic violence if that is a factor. I actually think state agency should do that, that it is an investment in people and in the long run far more productive than throwing people back on the scrap-heap, bullying them, withholding payments.
Shall we talk about dark satanic mills? As stated Great-Grandpapa Howard was a master-weaver. Don’t know occupations of the preceding generations, could have been long-time skilled craftsmen, could have been mill-workers, but I do know the obscenities of which the rich were capable and I don’t have any doubt some are still capable
Conservative Cambridge University Students 'Joked About Burning £20 In Front Of Homeless Man'
James Dawson in Stuff
Last updated 17:45, Wednesday 5 7 2017 17:45:48 BST
Student Tories at Cambridge University reportedly laughed off the scandal sparked by a student burning a £20 note in front of a homeless man, saying that 'it should have been a £50 note'.
The university came under pressure in February to expel Conservative Association member Ronald Coyne after he was videoed drunkenly burning the note.
Following the incident going viral, the Conservative Association said that there was 'no room for people who behave like that' in the group, and that it had 'determined the appropriate response to be to revoke his membership and bar him from all future events'.
Credit: SWNS
However, the Daily Mail has reported that a secret recording taken two weeks later at a Cambridge University Conservative Association (CUCA) event revealed that members broke out into 11 seconds of raucous laughter after one shouted out: 'It should have been a £50 note'.
The audio recording of the Q&A session with Havant MP Alan Mak reportedly captures members at the defending Mr Coyne and joking about the incident.
The MP's speech was informing members on 'how not to become a professional politician'.
Mr Mak claimed during his speech that said Mr Coyne's actions were 'not representative of the Conservative party in any sense of that word'. However, a student can then be heard saying that 'if a man can't do a stupid thing like that in his first year. I think that's really bad'.

Many of us did stupid things as students. Fewer of us did things that are palpably obscene.
Food-banks:
One clip here.
Another.
We are talking about basics, we are talking about survival. We are talking about where the next meal is coming from. The State is not being expected to do ‘everything’ here, not being expected to provide a nice cake for a birthday-tea, not being expected to provide new curtains. It is being expected to ensure the basics. The creature is slimy, of course. I agree entirely food-banks are excellent in the circumstances that prevail, a tribute to human generosity and blah. But the need for them is obscene. That someone should be reliant on a charitable impulse for a tin of beans and loaf of bread. The point, you nasty vicious ridiculous bastard, is that the State is NOT providing a basic level of support. And I personally think that bloody DWP creatures should be dragged out of bed to most speedily rectify their cock-ups, particularly with regard to Universal Credit. There are no circumstances whatever in which people should have nothing.
We are also talking a number of emotional factors. Explaining you haven't enough money to a public servant is something just about tolerable, a bit like baring your sins to a minister of religion, you wouldn't want to tell everyone, but if you go to a foodbank, your whole community knows. What do people feel like when they can’t feed themselves and their families? After a day’s work to boot.
The moderator, David Dimbleby, asked whether the Prime Minister could “sleep happily”, adding: ”Do you think it is fair that the nurses get just a 1% increase year in, year out, regardless of inflation, so they get poorer, so some of them we're told go to food banks?”
An audience member accused Ms May of “cutting NHS spending while cutting tax for the rich”.
“We have to make sure that we are managing our money carefully because at the end of the day there isn't a magic money tree that suddenly delivers all the money everybody wants for the spending everybody wants,” she responded.
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/theresa-may-nurse-magic-money-tree-bbcqt-question-time-pay-rise-eight-years-election-latest-a7770576.html
May of course another one whose working life outside politics has been limited to the financial sector, her and hubby both.
Boris Johnson has promised to cut taxes for around 3 million higher earners by raising the 40p threshold from £50,000 to £80,000 if he becomes prime minister, in a move condemned by senior Labour figures.
The Tory leadership hopeful used the Telegraph to make the case for the cut, saying, “We should be raising thresholds of income tax – so that we help the huge numbers that have been captured in the higher rate by fiscal drag.”
The move would cost around £9.6bn a year, which would be paid for partly from savings in Brexit no-deal preparations, he said.
The former foreign secretary also argued in his column that “we should be cutting business taxes”, despite the UK already having one of the lowest rates of corporation tax among developed economies, with successive reductions taking it from 28% in 2008 to 19% now.
…
Other leadership candidates have also promised tax cuts as they try to appeal to the 160,000 Conservative members who will vote for the prime minister from a shortlist of two picked by MPs. Jeremy Hunt, the foreign secretary, has pledged to use the no-deal “fiscal headroom” to slash corporation tax from 19% to just 12.5% – the same level as Ireland.
Dominic Raab, another leadership contender, was the first to promise lower income tax, saying the basic rate should fall from 20p to 15p over five years if he becomes prime minister. He has previously set out his view that the top rate of tax for those earning more than £150,000 should be scrapped altogether and that the higher rate should be cut to 35p.
Topics
Ah, yes, indeed no ‘magic money-tree’ but the country is in a perfect position to cut taxes for People Like Them. Nor is this all! The magic money-tree is real! It has come into leaf. It can provide 100 mn for Brexit leaflets (geddit).
There were 27.1 million households in the UK in 2016. The number of households has increased by 7% since 2006, similar to the growth in the UK population during this period. As a result average household size has remained at 2.4 people over the decade. In 2016, around 28% of households contained one person.
So it costs 100 million to produce and distribute 27.1 million leaflets, which is £3.69/leaflet, which is a bloody expensive book for this farce. The authors are civil servants and require no further payment. If you tell me no government department has a reprographics unit, I shall probably laugh. Anyone qualified in graphic design could put together a professional-looking publication given text and illustrations. Perhaps they all use quills? If we ask ourselves about distribution we arrive at the presence everywhere in the country of members of the Conservative Party who at election-time freely give their time to door-stepping and leafletting and they can bloody distribute them. Probably print them off and have access to a photocopier that will staple or to an automatic binder too. Has anyone told Boris that printers and photocopiers not only print and copy but sort, put the pages in the right order. If not that, they could be produced at local hubs, Manchester, Newcastle, Birmingham, etc, from which local party members could collect them. If anyone had the faintest interest in saving money, that is. I can only look forward with an amateur professional interest to receiving this wondrous work.
At least half the country could be given the option to opt out of paper and download it as an e-book or simply read it on the Web – unless of course one of the gems is that we shall no longer have Internet access.
You inflict this on the most vulnerable and not only continue to roll in the clover but dare propose tax cuts for the wealthy. Austerity? That means everyone suffers, filth-boys. First of all MPs can take a 50% pay-cut.
The basic annual salary for an MP from 1 April 2019 is £79,468. MPs also receive expenses to cover the costs of running an office, employing staff, having somewhere to live in London or their constituency, and travelling between Parliament and their constituency. https://www.parliament.uk/about/mps-and-lords/members/pay-mps/
Whaddya mean, you can't live on under 40K. Just have to bloody learn to manage your money better, hadn't you. You do get your additional costs covered separately. We are talking about what it costs to keep you alive, though frankly I don't see too much necessity for that.
The average UK salary Last year, the UK’s median earnings went up by 3.5 per cent, meaning that the average person took home about £569 per week, which works out at around £29,588 a year. Before you start either celebrating or consoling yourself, this data was taken by the Office For National Statistics and the figures, unsurprisingly, varied hugely depending on a person’s age and occupation: men aged between 40 and 49 earned the most at a median of £707.70 a week. Those employed as managers, directors and senior officials generally earned £266 more than the average person each week, whereas those working in care and leisure were typically the lowest paid.
https://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/article/average-uk-salary
Ditching non-essential expenditure. I am actually fond of Harry and Meghan and I think it's reasonable for the state to have paid for security at their wedding. But I don't think it's reasonable to have paid to the tune of 24 million, not least I gather because Windsor is a security nightmare. They have a sense of public duty, don't they. While people are reliant on foodbanks they could have had the wedding somewhere else. What does it matter, so long as it's scenic; the camera will be there. How about some remote castle in the Highlands, about which the US would have gone mad, anyone approaching it visible for about 20 miles. Or else of course the royal family could have nobly shouldered the entire cost.
A figure of 24 million is usually dismissed as chicken-feed in terms of the eye-watering total of public expenditure, which of course it is. Only I'm quite sure there are lots of 20 millions kicking around which could have remained unspent and 5 times 20 million is 100 million and 50 times is a billion, at least I think it is as in UK or US billion. This is a subject called arithmetic, at which most of us are capable, unless of course we work in the financial sector.
Simple questions. Has any government office anywhere in the country, any government building during this period of austerity been redecorated or refurbished, received any attention other than such as may have been required by health and safety, such as dealing with vermin or damp?
More than 50,000 people in the NHS earned more than £100,000 in 2013-14, an investigation by the Taxpayers' Alliance and Daily Mail shows. The organisations used the Freedom of Information Act to get details on pay packages for everyone from managers and hospital doctors to dentists and GPs. Researchers included bonuses, pension contributions and redundancy payments, as well as salaries, in the sums. The Taxpayers' Alliance said some of the figures were concerning. In particular, the lobby group highlighted the sums being paid to senior managers. The overwhelming majority of staff on six-figure salaries were clinical, including GPs, hospital consultants and dentists. But nearly 2,400 of the staff were employed by NHS bodies in the UK in non-clinical roles - of these 472 earned more than £150,000. The Daily Mail said its analysis of annual accounts of NHS bodies showed that the pay bill for NHS directors had risen by 22% in two years. Another 534 employees of quangos were also on six-figure salaries. 'Retire and rehire' Taxpayers' Alliance chief executive Jonathan Isaby said: "No-one begrudges paying doctors and nurses well for the tough jobs they do, but it's galling to see bosses at failing hospitals continuing to rake in the cash. "It's an insult to taxpayers, but it's even worse for patients who have suffered because of mismanagement and worse. "The rewards-for-failure culture is rife in the NHS and it must be stamped out as a matter of urgency."

In fairness a lot of it was virtual, letterhead, website, but every patient leaflet it printed had to be revamped. At minimum people were paid to perform this ludicrous task. Stuff like that.
Probably take a historian to uncover all the pointless expenditure hidden under stones. And a computer to add it up.
So far as I can recall Steward John Prescott was the last MP to have done anything ordinary. I really cannot be bothered to go through all of them, but if you have absolutely nothing better to do it's a game you can play on Wikipedia, Find the MP with a CV that doesn't include the word 'consultant', other than in a medical sense, or other criteria you might devise; the words 'bank' and 'banking' spring to mind. Trainee with WH Smith. Manager, WH Smith Anytown, Joined Marketing Department of Niceday Stationery. Keen amateur yachtsman and took year out to voyage around the world. sponsored by Niceday....Trained as veterinary nurse because couldn't afford university fees to become a vet. Became senior nurse and practice manager at Dog, Cat and Hamster Veterinary Surgeons. Moved to the PDSA and became manager of the PDSA Hospital in Somewhere. Just ordinary lives, all very different from each other.
In short I can see no indication that the well-off have been touched by this scam called austerity, other presumably than by the number of homeless people importuning them in the streets.
Can I find? Yes! Tis a wonderful thing to have had to sort out everything one possesses.
Poem I wrote some 30 maybe 40 years ago, probably under Thatcher.
"It may be a surprise to your readers that I and many other traders in the Strand consider ourselves to be 'liberals' in the most humane sense of the term." Michael Gottlieb of the Strand Association, letter to the Independent on Sunday.
Yes, you've guessed! They wanted the homeless removed.
We men of honour, lib'rals nonpareil
Astonished now to find in disarray
Our sensible scheme to wash down the drain
All malcontents, proles, who, lacking all brain
Hinder our progress, in, out, to and fro
We have to admit, we make mucho dough
And they have no rights, feelings of their own
All fellow-feeling we roundly disown
Any brotherhood, kinship, all crap like that
The worth of a man is the price of his flat
Waste your breath talking to brutes such as these
And don't get too close, you'll catch a disease
All toil they refuse, derelicts, feckless
You must understand, our scheme seems reckless
They do not want work, these children of dirt,
Refusing our offer, I was quite hurt
The wage we can give will more than suffice
For life on the street, surrounded by lice
No running water, not even a tap
Just move along there! Now there's a good chap.
Pity they went and abolished the knout
Turn on the hoses, you'll soon drive 'em out
We've never screwed up, not made one mistake
But boldly bestride a town on the make
And thus comes our right to frankly despise
The flotsam, the jetsam now meeting our eyes
On no man or woman did we rely!
Excepting of course parents, family
And if that net had broken? It did not.
Tough on the rest of you, go rot!
It's too long ago for it to be on the Net but reading between my lines they were offered pocket money, probably to go away, certainly not a living wage.
And don't forget whom Jesus threw out of the temple.
No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Every story runs into every other story and I've told the next one before, but briefly it goes Labour has a very long memory and certain vocal immigrants could not have upset and angered the indigenous working-class more if they'd tried for thirty years by the claim that the whole of England lived higher than a cat's back on the proceeds of Empire, that and they were treated badly because they weren't white, no-one would have treated a white child thus - except the obscene capitalist classes. Some people certainly so lived, but they weren't mill-girls, they weren't child-miners.
